The Second Department of Paediatrics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is housed at the “P. and A. Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital which is a tertiary care centre accommodating general paediatric wards and all paediatric subspecialties, PICU, NICU, surgical wards, Psychiatry Department, diagnostic laboratories etc. Approximately 6,500 children are admitted to the general paediatric wards and about 35,000 children visit the Emergency Department every year. The hospital is 1 of the 2 largest public Children’s Hospitals in Greece, serving a population of about 4 million in the greater Athens area and it also accepts referrals from central and southern Greece.
The 2nd Department of Pediatrics of the NKUA will support the activities and objectives of WP1 (recruitment of children and adults with inflammatory and infectious diseases) and WP8 (pilot demonstration study to evaluate the performance of PMSD approach on the management of febrile patients). It will also undertake the lead for WP10 (implementation assessment, stakeholder engagement and dissemination).
The 2nd Department of Paediatrics of the NKUA is a regional reference academic centre recognised for providing multidisciplinary and highly specialised paediatric care, operating several Paediatric Subspecialty Clinics that manage a large number of patients.
The Paediatric Infectious Disease (PID) unit is a reference centre for children with complex infections for central and southern Greece and a national training centre for PIDs. The PID unit operates a PID and paediatric Tuberculosis outpatient clinic. It also accommodates the Unit for Clinical Research in Infectious Diseases which participates in clinical trials on vaccines and antibiotics. The PID team also conducts research in tuberculosis, vaccine preventable diseases, healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistance, and optimal antibiotic use and diagnostics. The PID team participates in numerous international collaborations such as the PTBNET, ARPEC, the GARPEC-PENTA ID, the PED-MERMAIDS PENTA ID and RANIN-KIDS. The centre has been a partner of PERFORM and now is a partner of DIAMONDS. The PIDU activities are supported by the 2 research laboratories of the department namely the Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Diagnostics and the Allergy and Immunology Research laboratory.
The Allergy and Immunology Unit of the 2nd Department of Pediatrics of NKUA is the largest centre in Greece and a certified European Centre of Excellence.
The Rheumatology Unit is a reference centre for children with autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases for central and southern Greece.
