The University of Milan (UniMI) is a public teaching and research institution, with approximately 64,000 students. UniMI is a multidisciplinary university, with 8 faculties and teaching staff including more than 2000 professors. UniMI, the only Italian member of LERU (League of European Research Universities), is a leading institute in Italy and Europe in terms of scientific production. With 1139 annual publications and over 5000 points of impact factor, UniMI currently ranks second among all the Italian academic institutions. The Faculty of Medicine at UniMI, involving 26 medical facilities in the Milan area, is one of the main contributors to such scientific achievement; it enlists 668 professors and researchers and recruits approximately 1700 new students every year. With an academic program covering the whole spectrum of medical training, the Faculty boasts one of the highest rates of scientific production in the country. It is at the forefront of research innovation. Founded in 1967, the School of Rheumatology at UniMI involves 3 Rheumatology Units in Milan offering rheumatological care to a wide population.
The School of Rheumatology is based at Gaetano Pini Institute, where the Department of Rheumatology provides a state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic service for all the rheumatic conditions. It is the largest rheumatology facility in Milan, with 10 consultant rheumatologists and 15 fellows. The role of the Unit in DIAMONDS will mainly be recruiting for the inflammatory part of the study and collecting biological samples.
Both adult and pediatric rheumatology clinics are present in the associated Hospital, with a large number of outpatients and inpatients/year.
